    Matthew Beckwith came to New England in 1635, resided for a
    short, time at Saybrook Point, and in 163.7, was at Braford,
    Conn. Court records of August 1, 1639, show that he and four
    others were fined for "immoderate drinking att the pinnace."
    In 1640 he was a landowner in Hartford; in 1645 he bought 1and
    there from William Pratt, and in 1650 from John Gennings. He
    lived there until 1651, when he sold his property and removed
    to New London, Conn., settling in what is now East Lyme. He
    owneed the barque Endeavor, said to have been one of the first
    vessels launched from New London, and tradedwith the West
    Indies. He purchasedlarge tracts of land on the Niantic
    River and later deeded his land to his son Matthew. in "1680.
    Octob. 21. Matthew Beckwith Senr . aged about 70, came to his
    death by mistaking his way in a very dark night and fallen
    from a clift of rocks about 20 or 30 foot high, and beat out
    his braines against a stone he fell upon."
