    This is an old cemetery, located just above the South Addison turn off on New Route #17. It is said that there were many more stones in this cemetery but were destroyed when the new road went through around 1968. It is located on the left hand side of the highway going toward Freeman, N.Y.

    Copied March 21, 1970 by Mrs. Carol Robinson and Mrs. Susannah Whitcomb. We parked the car along side the highway, walked down the grading until we entered the field where stands a small cluster of trees and brush. We had to cross a small stream, more like a ditch. We copied all the stones that we could find. It is located on what used to be the original Bates farm, but now owned by a family named Ellison.

Misc*1902Birch Bark Pencilings, H. W. Howard, West Webster, NY, This poem was originally written on birth bark taken from a tree on the old Howard Homestead of the writer, near Chateaugay, NY. It was printed in the Northern Christian Advocate on January 8, 1902. According to Hazel Howard Holden, this was written by Grandfather admitting some of the wrongs committed and hoping for a clean slate in later years. Apparently, he was suspended from the Methodist Church for liking the ladies too much. Here is the poem:

This rind is from a tree whose bark
I oft engraved in childish play;
But passing years have hid each mark,
Each scar effaced, till in the park
No birch so white today.

So may the record I have made
and sadly marred in many a line
Be hid by nature's God or fade,
Until I find when last assayed
No page more white than mine.10

(unknown publisher address: unknown publisher, unknown publish date), St. Joe's Mourns Passing of Joan Howard. On Sunday, November 17th, St. Joseph's lost a dear friend and dedicated employee Joan Howard. The entire staff, Board, and the Fellowship share in mourning the death of Joan with her husband John, and sons Will and Johnny. Joan will be remembered for her untiring commitment and significant contributions to the work that carried on the mission of St. Joseph's. Her willingness to help others was recognized and appreciated by all who came to know her. The words of long time friend and colleague Ken Emery drew a fitting analogy to Joan's love of gardening...a few weeks before she died Ken told Joan that "the seeds she had planted at St. Joe's were perennial, and their blooms and fruit would be with us for many, many years to come." Ken said "Joan had an incredible gift of patience. Even when the fruits of her labor weren't quickly evident, she knew that seeds well planted would one day make a difference. She was something special."
