Misc* | 1902 | Birch Bark Pencilings, H. W. Howard, West Webster, NY, This poem was originally written on birth bark taken from a tree on the old Howard Homestead of the writer, near Chateaugay, NY. It was printed in the Northern Christian Advocate on January 8, 1902. According to Hazel Howard Holden, this was written by Grandfather admitting some of the wrongs committed and hoping for a clean slate in later years. Apparently, he was suspended from the Methodist Church for liking the ladies too much. Here is the poem: This rind is from a tree whose bark I oft engraved in childish play; But passing years have hid each mark, Each scar effaced, till in the park No birch so white today. So may the record I have made and sadly marred in many a line Be hid by nature's God or fade, Until I find when last assayed No page more white than mine.10 |

Your grandfather had grand dreams about rebuilding the historic old farmhouse. He was good at tearing down, but did no rebuilding whatsoever! The net result was that the back end of the house was more or less open to the elements. Not very good on wintry days.
