Witness1754Frederick Crounse and Elizabeth Livingston; Emigrated to New York., New York, New York, USA,8
WitnessBetween 1754 and 1755Frederick Crounse and Elizabeth Livingston; Moved to Rhinebeck, then headed for Schoharie, but ended up in Guilderland, Guilderland, Albany, NY, USA, Pg 5-6. After many storm tossed weeks on the ocean, they arrived in New York. From there they took passage on a small northbound Hudson river sloop and disembarked at the present Rhinebeck, where some of their countrymen had remained after the partial exodus to the promised land of Schoharie.

Guilderland was originally part of Rensselaerswyck, the patent originally granted to Kilian Van Rensselaer in 1614. The land grant was 24 miles long and wide on each side of the Hudson River with Albany (Fort Orange), as midpoint.

Recuperating from the long sea voyage, they soon discovered that little land was available. Again they set off with determination to reach the next large settlement of their countrymen along the Schoharie. On foot from the Hudson river, loaded down with their few belongings, the Krownskys plodeded their slow way day after day.

Finally their path lay along the foot of the Hellebergh, resplendent in its wooded heights, "bright and clear," as its Germanic name implies. Only 20 miles remained to the land of their dreams, to the homes and hearths of their countrymen, where they, too, might rest from their wanderings over land, sea and in time share in the fabulous rich earth of the "Schohary Valley." But here, beneath the mountain, mother Elizabeth sat down by the pathway to rest.

"I'm tired and wholly exhausted,: she said. "Not another foot can I go. Here we will make our home. This is the spot."

A lease of several hundred acres was secured from the Patroon of Rensselarswyck. At first a bark hut was erected. This served until son, Frederick took a wife, when a larger dwelling was erected on the west side of the road and close to thefoot of the mountain. And finally, the large white mansion now owned by Dr. Ruth Gilbert was built almont on the same spot in 1802.9,10

As a result Saratoga was supplied, the battle won and the English plan to split the colonies failed. The supply train had been organized and gathered by Frederick Crounse. His farm is on the Voorheesville Road (now Dr. Gabriel's). Because of his actions, Stephen Van Rensselaer gave him the opportunity to buy free title to his land.12,13,14,15,16

For some unknown reason, the elder son, Philip, now 22, was left behind in Germany.
  9. [S327] A. B. Gregg, Old Hellebergh, Pg 5-6. After many storm tossed weeks on the ocean, they arrived in New York. From there they took passage on a small northbound Hudson river sloop and disembarked at the present Rhinebeck, where some of their countrymen had remained after the partial exodus to the promised land of Schoharie.

Ruth Gilbert was built almont on the same spot in 1802.

Guilderland was originally part of Rensselaerswyck, the patent originally granted to Kilian Van Rensselaer in 1614. The Albany County history states that he was very patriotic during the Revolutionary struggle and contributed liberally toward the support of the American cause. The real story which every descendant of the second Frederick Crounse should be proud to read and hand down to posterity is that told by Simms in his History of Schoharie about a century agao. He says: -
The following anecdote will serve to show the patriotism of the late patroon, Stephen Van Renssalaer. When the troops under General Gates were opposing Bugoyne near Saratoga, General Ten Broeck, who was guardian of the patroon, then in his minorirty, visited some of his nephew's tenants near the Helleberg, and requested them to take all the provisions and grain they could spare (reserving a bare competency for their families) to the American army. Several emptied their granaries, pork barrels, cattle stalls and pig styes, and delivered there effect to the commissary department at Saratoga, not expecting any usual reward for so doing. Some time after, to their surprise, the young patroon invited those tenants to Albany and presented them with valid titles to their lands. Such was one of the many acts of that good man distinguished through life for his generosity and benevolance. - Frederick Vogel to whom the facts were communicated after the war by Frederick Crounse, one of the tenants alluded to in the context."

This meant the yearly land rentals were forever waived, and if such was the case it was no mean gift to the old patriot and to his heirs.

[S493] unknown article title, Freedom Born: The American Revolution in the Hellebergh, by Carol DuBrin, unknown location, July 14, 1983, The army at Saratoga was at the right place at the right time. But they had a severe problem - the lack of a necessary supply - food. Frederick Crounse (his farm is marked on the Altamont-Voorheesville Road by a historical marker) learned of this need and he arranged a wagon train of food and supplied gathered from his own and neighboring farms and bravely drove that "train" right through to our forces in Saratoga. Hereinafter cited as Freedom Born: The American Revolution in the Hellebergh, by Carol DuBrin.

The supply train had been organized and gathered by Frederick Crounse. His farm is on the Voorheesville Road (now Dr. Gabriel's). Because of his actions, Stephen Van Rensselaer gave him the opportunity to buy free title to his land. Hereinafter cited as A Walk Through Two Centuries of Guilderland History.
