Baptism #2346 in the Kingston Church records has caused problems to Freer Genealogists in the past. It states that Hugo Freer and Marretje Jans had a daughter Rebecca baptized in 1715. This Marretje Jans is witness to baptism #2347. A careful search of other documents has led us to the conclusion that this was one of the fewerrors Dr. Hoes made in transcribing the old records. Hugo Freer had only one wife. Marretje Jans was the wife of Rutger Jacobs. - [S406] Kenneth E. Hasbrouck, Text, Erma R. DeWitt, Photographs, The Street of the Huguenots (unknown publisher address: unknown publisher, unknown publish date), This house at the north end of the original street has been the cause of some confusion as to the builder. Evidence brought to light since the historical marker was placed by the state, proves that the north end was built by Hugo Freer, Sr., son of Hugo Freer, the Patentee, before 1709. The south end was erected about 1735.
The house passed into the possession of the Low family through the marriage of Johannes M. Low to Rebecca, daughter of Hugo Freer, Sr.
Rev. John Wright Follette, a descendant of Hugo Freer, purchased the house in 1943, and has restored many of the old features that give it an atmosphere and charm in keeping with the other stone houses on the street.
It must be remembered when considering features of these houses, that the descendants of the Patentees had slaves. Perhaps this may account for the interesting compartment in the Freer house, between the new and old cellar. - [S1399] Joan deVries Kelley, compiler, "The Low in the Freer-Low Family"; Ancestral File (Spring-Summer 2008), unknown repository, unknown repository address.
