Witness | 1639/40 | He is spoken of as "of Monoticott", MA, USA, Monoticott is the name of the stream forming Weymouth's northern boundary, and seems to have likewise designated the region on the north of this stream, the site of the modern village of Braintree, then and for some years afterward practically unsettled.
A notable trait of our early colonial ancestors, coming as they did from a country where landholding was the privilege of the few, was their desire to own large estates. Then, too, the natural increase was rapid; towns speedily became too cramped, and boundaries were enlarged or extensive migrations removed the surplus population. Boston, with its advantage of location, soon outstripped the other towns, and the narrow peninsula became almost at once overcrowded. Out beyond Dorchester to the south between the Neponset river and the Monoticot, lay a tract, containing Mt. Wollaston, well known a few years earlier as the resort of Morton of Merry Mount, but now unoccupied; and by decree of the General Court in September, 1634, it was "ordered that Boston shall have enlargement at Mount Wollaston." Under this permission two or three large grants were made by the town of Boston, and then, 4 January 1636, a committee appointed with full powers to allot the land. At the very outset the settlement was almost broken up by the Antinomian troubles, the party of Mrs. Hutchinson and her sympathizers centering there until expelled by the intolerant colonial authorities. But 16 September 1639, those dwelling at the Mount had so increased in numbers that a church was formed. Settlers came in rapidly, and among many like grants from the Bostom committee is the following: "24 February 1639-40, to Richard Rockett, of Monoticott, at Mount Woolystone, a great lot there for 5 heads 20 acreas, and 20 acres more at his request. For example: the vital statistics of Medfield, Mass., down to 1728, as kept by the town clerks, show 11 Rockets, 49 Rocketts, 1 Rockitt, and 5 Rockwoods; all members of one family.
Abner Morse gave what seems to be the true explanation of this; after much investigation he became convinced "that the name was never spelled Rockett by the family. It was so pronounced, as it still is, and so written by others, and answered to by the Rockwoods. But on no petition, deed, will, or certificate, ancient or modern, signed by either of them have I ever found it subscribed otherwise than Rockwood; and both Nicholas and John, as if mindful of the importance of the true orthography, had their marriages in 1656 and 1662 recorded by the name of Rockwood. Such precaution in their day and circumstances was anomalous and significant. Other families yielded to innovation, adopted without resistance the misspelling of clerks, and selfom if evere recovered the original orthography of their names when thus publicly corrupted. But the Rockwoods (some if not all of the 4 first generations) withstood the corruption (universal on town records until 1728), continued to subscribe their names Rockwood, and they seem finally to have effected the correction everywhere, though at different and wide intervals. None of the race are known to retain the more convenient spelling of Rocket." - [S87] unknown author, The Descendants of Benjamin Rockwood, Sr. of Grafton, Massachusetts: with some account of his ancestry and the early Rockwoods in Massachusetts by Charles Alcott Flagg, LDS Library, SLC, US/Can 929.273, A1, No. 1747., Among the earliest entries preserved in the Dorchester archives is the following, dated 3 December 1633: "Ordered that Rich: Rocket is to have an acre addition to his home lott in consideration of removing his pale (fence) in regard a publicke way is to be through his lott."

Witness | Between 1400 and 1600 | History of name and family; The origin of the French name "Parmentier" brings to fore the many different spellings of the name, particularly in various countries. The spelling as used in the famed "Hundred Rolls" of England are: le Parmentier, le Parmunter, and Parmuntarius. In Holland the spellings are Polmeteer, Palmiter, Palmateer.
There appears to be some agreement that the oldest meaning of the name goes back to the period when the Romans invaded Gaul (France). The soldiers necessarily had to be clothes and those who were responsible for making the clothes and keeping them repaired were, by the Roman spelling: Parmentiere. Hence these persons were actually "tailors" and therefore this has been accepted as the meaning of the name "Parmentier."
Many Parmentiers resided in Dieppe, in the north of France on the English Channel. Probably the most famed was Jehan Parmentier, who was born in Dieppe about 1494. In his relatively short life he became one of the most renowned explorers of his day, including being credited with the discovery of the port of Pernambucco in 1520 - the farthest eastern point of the country of Brazil - now known as Recife.
The oldest known ancestor was Guillaume de Parmentier, born about 1465 in Dieppe. He married Chrystyne in France. The Parmentiers of Dieppe were Protestants, later called Hugernots and were experiencing severe persecution at the hands of Catholic Queen Catherine and her sons. This persecution resulted in many Protestants being beheaded.
Guillaume (William) finally had to flee to the mountains to save his life, and from there escaped across the English Channel to England and freedom. He was born about 1465 and died before 1523 in Little Yeldham, Essex Co., England. He married Christyne in Dieppe about 1490 and had George, born about 1492 in France. The family settled in Little Yeldham about 1520. The next four generations all resided in Little Yeldham, exceptin Deacon John, who moved eight miles to Bures St. Mary, Suffolk County, which is situated on both sides of the River Stoa and divides the two counties elsewhere. After the death of his father, William in 1617, Deacon John resided in Bures for twenty one years prior to his departure to New England in 1638-9. They lived in Watertown for a short time but then moved on to the new town of Sudbury in the fall of 1639 when John was selected as the sixth Commissioner to land out the lands and distribute them to the consenting families.
Deacon John was a selectman, deacon, tavernkeeper and held several civil offices in the town. He died in Roxbury, MA on May 1, 1671.
Many other Parmentiers escaped to other countries, such as Belgium, Holland, Germany, etc. Those entering Holland subsequently had their names Hollandized to such variations as Polmateer, Palmateer, etc. Some of thes immigrants to Holland subsequently arrived in America at New Amsterdam (New York) and settled up the Hudson Valley along with many other Dutch settlers.3
