Event-Misc* | Circa 1835 | Clinton, Clinton, NY, USA, Pg. 301 Osiah Howard was a great bear-trapper,but on one occasion paid dearly for his temerity. Having captured a large one in a trap one day, he unloosened the chain which bound the latter to a tree, and putting it over shoulder, attempted to dray the bear home by the leg. But the brute, mindful of the effectiveness of an attack in the rear, turned upon him, and seizing him by the hips, lacerated him terribly, so that he was glad to escape with his life from her angry attack. By this means he gained a lesson that was of value to him for a long time thereafter.7 |

Milit-Beg | 1775 | Capt. Sawyer's Co.4 |
Milit-Beg* | Between 1777 and 1784 | Title conferred by the Andover militia of an early day of which he was Captain., Andover, Windsor, VT, USA, He fought at Stillwater, Princeton, and other battles of the period in the Revolutionary War. He served throught the war, and was when discharged from service at the close of the war, many hundred miles from his home in Douglas, MA. The journey thither, he with others of his company, were compelled to make on foot, and their route lay through a portion of country sparsely settled. The party often suffered severely from hunger. At one time the party had traveled several days without eating scarsely anything, and as they toiled on, weak and exhausted, they came across a dead horse lying by the road side. Hunger overcame their natural repugnance against eating such food, and kindling a fire, they cut slices from the carcas of the dead animal, which they boiled and ate with a keen religh. Howard often related this incident in after life, always remarking when he did so, that it was the sweetest meat he ever tasted.2,5 |
Address* | 1785 | Andover, Windsor, VT, USA, Solomon Hayward was listed on the 3rd Grand List, taken in Andover, 1785 where he was listed for 16# 10s. In 1797 He was listed among the first men of Andover who took the freeman's oath for the election of representative to the General Assembly.2 |

Witness | Between 1785 and 1790 | The Captain was always a generous man, and was very public-spirited, Andover, Windsor, VT, USA, "It was the custom for all the young men in the neighborhood, after planting, to meet at his home for a holy-day, playing ball, westling, shooting at a mark and other athletic sports, and at night, Mr. Howard would always give them a supper in his house. And in the winter evenings, the young people would often gather there for a dance and social enjoyements, and were always welcome and free to the best of his home afforded. He would give away, it is said, if he went without himself. It is told, he worked chopping all one winter without shoes, that his wife made socks out of bed-quilt, that she sewed on his feet, and in this way used up a whole quilt during the wiunter. That is the way, it seems, some of the best and bravest of the first settlers, fared first in the woods here. About the way all over the state.6 |
Witness | Between 1785 and 1790 | Story of catamounts, Andover, Windsor, VT, USA, Solomon Howard, while clearing his farm, often worked into the dusk of the evening; once when he had worked thus returning to his home he was confronted by two catamounts. He had no weapon but his axe, and, tough a brave man, he thought discretion the better part of valor, and made a quick retreat back to his fires, followed by the cats. They aproached within a short distance of the fires and commenced a fierce growling, they were bent for the man but afraid of the fires. Howard set himself to make the fires bright. The catamounts kept around all night; sometimes on the trees and sometimes on the ground, keeping up their growling; and Howard hastened to roll the logs on to his fire and pile on the brush and then quickly grabbing his axe stood ready for an attack till his fire again needed replenishing. Morning dawned at last and the catamounts stole off and Howard went gladly to his home.7 |
