This was given to DHJ on June 17, 1998, by Mr. Yost, the President of Hopkinsville Milling Company. As we read this history it becomes apparent that if Mr. Johnson worked there he was not the manager. However, it is of interest as it lets us know what mills operated in Hopkinsville at this time.
The HOPKINSVILLE MILLING COMPANY was formed in May of 1908, by the merger of two exising flour milling companies, the CRESCENT MILL, located on East 7th Street and L & N Railroad tracks, and CLIMAX MILL, located at 21st and Walnut Streets.

The CRESCENT MILL had been started in 1874 by J. T. Rabbeth, who was soon joined by F. J. Brownell as partner, and by about 1876 as full owner. The business became known as CRESCENT MILLS and was incorporated under that name in 1886 when stock was sold to the public. Dividends were paid every year from then until its merger into HOPKINSVILLE MILLING COMPANY in 1908.

The CLIMAX MILL had been built in 1906 by a new company led by Mr. Ross Rogers, who became part of the new HOPKINSVILLE MILLING COMPANY management team under Frank K. Yost.

After the CRESCENT and CLIMAX were combined, they both continued o mill wheat into flour until the shortage of wheat during World War I led to a change at the CRESCENT MILLS to a system to grind corn only. When wheat became plentiful again in 1919, there seemed to be no more demand for corn meal. This plant had very little activity until about 1945 when the Company began to produce SUNFLOUR SELF RISING CORN MEAL MIX.

In the nearly 118 years since the old CRESCENT MILLS began, we have had just four managers - Mr. F. J. Brownell from 1874 to 1904, Mr. F. K. Yost from 1904 to 1937, Mr. Frank A. Yost, his son, from 1937 to 1987. Mr. Haywood Strader was elected President of the company in 1987 and serves in that capacity today..., Ancestral File unknown repository, unknown repository address. , July 1, 1911, SUDDEN IS DEATH
    OF MRS. GEORGE H. JOHNSON
    WHICH OCCURRED FRIDAY AT NOON
    HAD BEEN SICK 2 DAYS
City Astonished to hear of Death
of One of its Best Women
Like a thunderbolt out of the clear sky came the news Friday that Mrs. Sarah E. Johnson, wife of George H. Johnson, had died. Scarcely anyone knew that she was even sick and the whole city was shocked to hear the news. Deah came after only a day of illness and even when she was breathing for the last time her family were not able to realize that she was dying. Her many friends were astonished when they heard the news.
Wednesday night at supper Mrs. Johnson ate something that disagreed with her and she was slightly sick Wednesday night. She was able to be up again Thursday afternoon, but was taken to bed again Thursday night.
She had been in good health most of her entire life, but had been in slightly bad health this spring. Not until a few hours before her death did her family feel alarmed at her condition, nor did the physicians.
She was one of Madison's best women and her life was exemplary. For forty years she was an active member of the Methodist Church and was always conspicuous in religious work. Her name was always to be found included in the memberships of societies and organizations for the betterment of mankind. She belonged to the W. C. T. U. (Women's Christian Temperance Union) and the Ladies Aid Society and other like organizations in the city.
Beloved by her children to whom she made a model mother and by her husband, with whom she had sailed happily over life's seas for a score and a half years, bereavement made the more sad because of the suddenness of her death, will be inestimable.
Sarah E. Stith was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, Jan. 25, 1847. She was married to Enoch Duncan w2ho died in 1874. To them was born one child, Miss Kate Duncan. In 1878 she was married to George H. Johnson. There were four children born to them, three of whom are living - Miss Myurtle Johnson, who lives with her parents, Moss Johnson of Henderson, and Hubert Johnson, who lives in New Orleans and was to have journeyed to Madisonville next week. Harry Johnson died in infancy.

Mr. Johnson came to Madisonville to enter into the milling business in 1902, coming here from Henderson.

The deceased is survived by her brother, G. T. Stith of Louisville, who will have arried in the city today. Ortie Stith of Henderson, a nephew, arrived in the city Friday. Moss Johnson of Henderson, her son, was at her side when death came.

Miss Kate Duncan, who has been visiting in Louisville, received a telegram a few minues afer her mother died telling her of the illness, but she did not know of her death until she arrived here later in the afternoon.

Funeral arrangements are pending awaiting communication with Hubert Johnson, who is visiting a friend in New York. He left New York Friday for Niagara Falls and has not been located. It is likely he will receive the telegram today. The funeral will likely be Sunday. The body will be interred in Hopkinsville in the Stith burying ground.

    , July 1, 1911, SUDDEN IS DEATH
    OF MRS. GEORGE H.
