We had paid just under $25,000 for the house. Exxon Coal & Minerals Company, Houston, Harris, TX, USA, I continued to progress in my job, was in the Human Resources Dept. rather than Law and so was misplaced as far as my work was concerned. ECMC wasn't like EssoEX and there was not the opportunity to grow or the bosses who cared, so I was happy in 1993 when the company had a "program" and I bailed out (along with many others). It was about the last good program - for people with my service a bonus of 1.5 year's salary! I never have regretted the move. Retirement is great.15

"Halt! One, two, Right dress! Front! At ease!"
Wendell has spent much of his brain energy this year drilling the stalwar youths of Company A over he Armory floor Who would guess from this that he is a parson's son. Rumors are repeatedly reaching us that Wendell keeps company ith a charming young lady in both the lower and upper halls. This is rather a surprise to us but it is only one of many. In later life Wendell intends, so he says, to become a forester or soldier, at either of which we are sure he will be successful.

Event-Misc28 December 1988Funeral - St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Houston, Harris, TX, USA, Carroll's funeral was held at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church on Long Point, Houston, The Rev. Chas. Hood, officiating. It was a celebration of his life on earth and of his birthday into a new world. Music was all happy easter music, very upbeat, and at end of service a New Orleans jazz band was playing "When the saints go marching in" as we left the church.

Most of those attending the service came back to the house where we had tented the back yard and the jazz band played. We had put up a bulletin board with photos and newspaper clippings showing events from his life. The Inn on the Park catered the food - all of Carroll's favorites - beef tenderloin on rolls, gumbo, red beans and rice, and fresh fruit.

Those who came from New Orleans included Doug, Susan and Belle Johnson, Dorothy Marchal, Mamsie Marchal Manard, and Hank Marchal. John Giesecke came from Washington, D.C.1,23

Our 1999 Volunteer of the Year
    Introducing John. Howard

    By THOMAS ABELLO
    Enterprise Staff Writer

SARANAC LAKE, John Howard saw a need and offered to help. Soon after, he saw more needs and worked hard to address those as well.

Howard has volunteered with a number of organizations, including the High Peaks Hospice and the Village Improvement Society (VIS) to make Saranac Lake a bet ter place to live. The needs the Howard has worked tirelessly: to address and the countless hours of community support he has given to this All America City are the primary reasons why the A d i r o n d a c k Publishing Company's staff named him the 1999 "Volunteer of the Year."

"I found a home here" Howard, who moved to Saranac Lake 14 years ago, said. "It's an awfully good community.. It's got everything going for it and unfortunately most people don't appreciate it."

Asked why he volunteers so much of his time to the community Howard said "It's something that needs to be done.. I'm retired so I
the time to do it. Things need to get dfone and I've got the opportunity to do it. That what I do and I love it. If you don't have volunteers, so many things will never get done. There are so many people doing it, it's not just me."

Howard, who serves as chairman of High Peaks Hospice's Annual Radio Day fund raising effort, joined the organization two years ago after the death of his wife. He became active in the group as a payback for all the support and assistance it provided for him when his wife was ill.

"I have a great deal of empathy for what they do: he said. It's such a marvelous program.:

As chairman of the fund raising drive, Howard visited, 128. businesses throughdut the area seeking donations. The one-day event
raised roughly. $39,000 for the organization, he noted.

Every fall for the past three years, Howard, a former golf professional, helps lay the ice at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. A group of volunteers spray water on the rink's surface every two hours over a 14-day period.

"My kid was a hockey player and when I was asked I said `sure'" Howard remarked.

Howard also volunteers with the Franklin County Probation Department working with troubled teen-agers. As a volunteer, he supervises the teen-agers during their community service sentences.

"I really enjoy it," Howard said of working with the kids, adding that he plans on entering a mentoring program at the middle school.

Additionally, Howard is the official chauffer of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival King and Queen - a duty that he truly takes seriously.

"It's a little class. You drive them up to the front door, escort them and treat them like royalty should because they are royalty," he said.

Howard dismisses the notion that volunteerism is dying, rather he believes nobody is being asked to lend a hand.

"Most people that are asked will do it, but they're not being asked," Howard said. "It's not the fault of the task at hand it's the fault of those in charge."

He cited the Gotzmer family fund raising effort held in Saranac Lake on March 26 and 27 as a prime example of volunteerism. The event was held in an effort to offset the Gotzmer family's medical bills. SamuelGotzmer was severely injured in a car accident in Mid March and is being treated in Fletcher Allen HealthCare in Burlington, Vt.

"Now that's volunteerism, Somebody said, here's a need ,and the people responded, It's phenomenal."

And, what does Howard get from all of the volunteering? Personal satisfaction. "We've done an awful lot of work here for the VIS and nobody knows that I did it or I was a part of doing it. All they know is that the place looks nice and that's the way it should be," Howard said. "I'm just one little cog in the wheel. You get a little self-satisfaction out of it. That's the way it should be. That's what volunteering is all about."
